Joint statement urging release of $500 million in active transportation funds

The situation: Shovel-ready projects are stalled

While the federal government committed $500 million for capital active transportation projects in 2025, these funds remain unreleased. Across Canada, municipalities and First Nations are waiting on the green light from the Ministry of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.

With the 2026 construction season upon us, further administrative delays risk losing an entire building year.

Joint statement

Coordinated by Vélo Canada Bikes, a group of 101 national, provincial, and local organizations has submitted a Joint Statement to Minister Gregor Robertson. We are calling for the immediate release of these funds to address:

  • Affordability: Safe walking and cycling infrastructure provides reliable, zero-cost alternatives to car dependency as gas prices soar.
  • Housing: Active transportation infrastructure serves as the connective tissue that makes new high-density housing developments viable.
  • Economy: Cycling and walking infrastructure supports local jobs and maximizes transit investments.

  • National organizations: Leading organizations from the health, environmental, and transportation sectors including the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart & Stroke, the David Suzuki Foundation, and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).
  • Leading Canadian businesses: Major industry players including Giant Bikes Canada and Cycles Devinci, representing the economic footprint of the cycling sector.
  • Provincial and local organizations: Major provincial entities such as Vélo Québec, Cycle Toronto, BIXI Montréal, and HUB Cycling.
